A number of states conduct regular surveys and inventories to assess how their schools are progressing in managing a variety
of TCO-related issues. Here are some examples:
California: The State Department of Education, along with the California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP) conducts an annual
survey on the amount and type of technology in schools. Schools are asked to update their data annually.

Florida: The Florida Department of Education's Division of Technology conducts an annual Technology Resources Survey that
measures the progress that schools in that state have made toward specific technology goals. See

Maryland: The state has created an online data base to let schools provide information for the state's technology inventory.

Massachusetts: The state of Massachusetts collects annual data from school tech plans to track state-wide benchmarks for such
things as tech support levels, staff development and high-speed bandwidth. More information is available at

New Jersey: Information about the state's annual survey of technology-related benchmarks, and a summary of findings, is

Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania has implemented a technology inventory survey that is designed to assess the support that districts
are providing for such budget components as tech support and staff development. The tool can be accessed at
www.etechplanner.org.
Washington: The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction completed a building technology inventory in March 2001. The
results, from 2,080 buildings, are available at www.k12.wa.us/edtech/survey.asp.
States sometimes publish guides, guidelines, technology plans and technology specifications that can help school districts in
making technology-related decisions. Here are some of them.

Ohio: "The Importance of TCO and Support in Technology Planning," is a PowerPoint presentation prepared by Sam
Orth, executive director of the Ohio SchoolNet Commission. It incorporates information from the CoSN TCO project and other sources.
Pennsylvania: The state has created an online Technology Inventory system to collect data about the technology
capabilities of local education agencies. This tool is located at
