VOI Case Studies

CoSN has released two new case studies chronicling how school districts in Iowa and Wisconsin measured and assessed the costs and benefits of planned technology projects, as part of CoSN’s ongoing Value of Investment (VOI) Leadership Initiative. The case studies and the Initiative were developed to help district level technology decision makers assess the costs and evaluate the benefits of proposed technology investments before making costly, time intensive decisions and commitments. The VOI studies are intended to provide school technology administrators and other educators with insight on best practices for making sound choices about education technology projects. The Wisconsin case study explores the value of investment in implementing online learning within the district, and the Iowa study evaluates a proposed formative assessment program. The case studies can be found at http://www.edtechvoi.org/casestudies/. A third case study involving a proposed one-to-one student computing project will be posted with the other two case studies in the next couple of weeks.

TCO/VOI Article

Check out Rich Kaestner’s article, Gauging Technology Costs and Benefits in the May issue of AASA’s The School Administrator magazine, or read and print the formatted hardcopy (PDF). This article is designed to help school and district decision-makers through the technology project decision process.

Updated VOI Benefits Workbook

The Excel workbook used to determine and score measurable benefits has been revamped to make it easier to use. Also the “21st Century Skills: Workforce Development and College Prep” benefits section has been enhanced. The workbook can be found at http://www.edtechvoi.org/casestudies/. A third case study involving a proposed one-to-one student computing project will be posted with the other two case studies in the next couple of weeks.
